All You Need To Know But Are Too Shy To Ask

We, the Administrators, created this step-by-step guide for classmates to use in navigating our site more easily. We thought it would help people that were uncomfortable or “challenged” using computers, for greater ease of participation with less frustration. So start by clicking on the red links in the list below.

The Madison web pages are intended for reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. All of us on the Reunion Committee welcome and encourage your use of this social networking site and these pages to share memories and stories as well as providing updates on your lives since leaving Madison High School and, for many, the Portland area.
Please use good judgment when posting messages. Personal attacks, political and religious messages, as well as inappropriate language will be removed immediately. Remember, we are the Administrators—We can do that.

We don't know about you, but we need directions in front of us for anything we want to do. You just can't remember them after one reading, or even two. Therefore, to print any of the information on any page of the Madison site, do the following:
1. Have the desired information on your computer screen
2. Choose FILE from the top bar (left-hand side) of your Internet connection. A "drop down" list will, well, drop down.
3. Hit PRINT and a large box will appear.
4. Choose PRINT again, and your information will, you guessed it, print.
1. Hold down the CONTROL key and hit the key "p" at the same time.
2. The large box will appear. Choose PRINT, and your information will print
1. Hit the little computer icon on the bar on the toolbar above.
2. Choose PRINT and the information will print.

The easiest way to send us a message (an e-mail) is to use the black tab entitled CONTACT US at the top of the web page. A large message box will come up with your e-mail address already in place. You can type in anything you'd like:
  1. New information on a classmate
  2. Corrections on any part of the site
  3. Questions about how to do something on the site (We don't have all the answers, obviously; but Class Creator, the architects of our site does and we have access to them)
  4. Suggestions for improving the site
  5. Material, or <s>photos</s>, you wish considered for a particular part of the site
  6. Anything else you would like the reunion committee and the site administrators to consider.
We, the Reunion Committee, thank you for your participation and hope you'll help us make this the best class site out there.

COPY and PASTE allows you to take on-screen material from one source and place it in another. In other words, should you find a particularly interesting article you wish to send to a colleague, you can "copy" the text and "paste" it into an e-mail. Not all material on the Internet, however, can be copied; it will be easy to tell when this is the case..*

  1. Place your cursor at the beginning of the text and hold down the left mouse button as you guide the cursor through the desired text. The writing will be highlighted with a background color, usually black or blue.
  2. When you reach the end of the material you wish to copy, release the left mouse button.
  3. Hold down the CONTROL key (Ctrl, lower left on the keyboard) and hit the key "c." The information will be magically transported to the unseen clipboard.
  1. Do 1 & 2 above
  2. Put the cursor on the highlighted material      (where it turns into an arrow). Right click and then choices are displayed; left click on “copy” and it also magically transports the material to the unseen clipboard. Either way (your choice) will work.

  1. Place your cursor on the page and line where you wish your text to appear.
  2. Hold down the CONTROL key and hit the key "v." The information will magically move from the unseen clipboard to your chosen page.
  1. Place your cursor on the page and line where you wish your text to appear
  2. Right click once on the mouse then left click on paste. Again the information will magically move from the unseen clipboard to exactly your chosen page and line.
Many pictures can be copied in the same manner; but, please note, you can NOT use this method to transfer photos to our web site.
*If you find that the information you desire does not highlight in step 1 under To COPY, this means the material can not be transferred.

At this writing, there are 6 possible pages for the administrator to fill with content. All those in current use will be listed in the black, left-hand column of the Home Page. Survey topics, if there are any, come first; page topics like your 50th Year Reunion come next; and Missing Senators9\ is usually last in this section. To view any of these, click on the topic of your choice; and the desired page will come up. You will be able to navigate through the entire content by using the red sliding bar on the right-hand side of the page. To go to another page, just choose the topic from the left side and click on it. It isn't necessary to close one page before going to another. To leave the site altogether, you can click the "X" in the box at the top right-hand corner, but it is better to LOG OFF (which is the last choice in the MEMBER FUNCTIONS area on the left side of the screen.)

SENDING e-mails

To e-mail a classmate, begin by clicking on the black tab at the top of the Home Page entitled SENATOR PROFILES.
A list of all classmates will come up. Below the box containing the icons there is a box [Search Senators] click in it and you can find a person without scrolling down through the list of over 600 people. Choose whom you wish to e-mail, and click on the name. His or her profile will appear.

  1. Go to the bottom of the page and you will find a box titled SEND A PRIVATE MESSAGE TO___________ (Your classmate's name will be filled in as well as your name in the FROM box.)
  2. Type a topic in the SUBJECT box.
  3. Type your message, or comment, in the large box below the FROM and SUBJECT sections.
  4. Choose the SEND MESSAGE tab to get your e-mail on its way.
  5. Remember: Your message can only be read by the classmate you send it to, like any other e-mail that is sent via the Internet.
If you wish to leave a comment on the profile page, click on the POST COMMENT button and type in your message.  Keep in mind that this comment can be read by anyone who pulls up the page. The owner of this profile can remove your comment.
If you wish notification when this profile is updated, check the box NOTIFY ME WHEN THIS PROFILE IS UPDATED. You can UNSUBSCRIBE, or cancel notification, by returning to this profile and unchecking the box.

An explanation of the topic, MESSAGE CENTER, follows:
This feature lists all the e-mails you have received (your IN BOX) as well as those you have sent (your OUT BOX) through this web site. Your messages will remain in their respective boxes until you delete them.
A KEY at the top of both the IN BOX and OUT BOX shows symbols representing the status of an e-mail. You will find one of these symbols to the left of each e-mail listed.
Each listed e-mail shows: (1). A box to check, (2). Its status; (3). Either who sent it to you (IN BOX) or who you sent it to (OUT BOX), (4). Subject and date of e-mail, and (5). A red "X."
In both the IN BOX and OUT BOX settings, clicking on sender's name brings up that person's profile page and clicking on the subject brings up the actual e-mail.
Clicking inside the box on the far left or on the red "X" on the far right, will turn the background red. This means that the e-mail can be deleted by choosing the tab at the bottom of the page that says .

An explanation of the topic, LOG OUT, follows:
Many of our users select to "stay logged in" by hitting the X in the upper right hand corner when they leave the site. Therefore, they will always be logged onto the site until they click the LOG OUT link under Member Functions. If you are using a computer to which other people have access this is not a good practice. Classmates using the same e-mail must LOG OUT before the other classmate can login. When somebody selects the option to stay logged in by using the X, our system allows that user to bypass the login screen when they come back to the site. Either click LOG OUT or X out…your option.

While logged on to the site you have the option to have a one on one chat with a site member that is also logged on. This is an Instant Message (IM) functionality. On any page, with the MHS  background , go to the Members Online box  at the bottom right hand side of the page. If the Members Online box  does not appear in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, some how it has gotten turned off. To turn it back on, go to the left side of the home page and under Member Functions there will be a function called “Turn on IM”. When you click it, the Members Online box will appear. Go to the white arrow, to the left of the big white X, and click on it. It now exposes all of the members online with you. Choose the member you wish to chat with by putting your cursor on their name. A pop-up will then appear with a choice of Chat or Profile. If you click on Profile it will, well, take you to their profile, Click on Chat and a screen will appear to the left of the Members Online box. Move your cursor below the red line that says Private Chat. It says “Type message for (Name of Person you chose) here, then press Enter to send. When you hit enter, your message will be sent.
